Sonates et Partitas for solo violin by Johann Sebastian Bach (1720) is considered the “Everest for violinists.” Yehudi Menuhin made the first recording of the complete works in the mid 1930s. This film, which focuses on the Sonatas, is a dialogue between Yehudi Menuhin and Claire Bourdet, who interpreted the contemporary versions. The various movements are played in turn until they are performed together in an unexpected polyphony. Sonaten is a film about listening to music, music as an image of time.
